The Penguin History of the World: Sixth Edition, by J. M. Roberts

The completely updated edition of J. M. Roberts and Odd Arne Westad's widely acclaimed, landmark bestseller The Penguin History of the World For generations of readers The Penguin History of the World has been one of the great cultural experiences - the entire story of human endeavour laid out in all its grandeur and folly, drama and pain in a single authoritative book. Now, for the first time, it has been completely overhauled for its 6th edition - not just bringing it up to date, but revising it throughout in the light of new research and discoveries, such as the revolution in our understanding of many civilizations in the Ancient World. The closing sections of the book reflect what now seems to be the inexorable rise of Asia and the increasingly troubled situation in the West. About the authors: J.M. Roberts, CBE, published The Penguin History of the World in 1976 to immediate acclaim. His other major books include The Paris Commune from the Right, The Triumph of the West (which was also a successful television series), The Penguin History of Europe and The Penguin History of the Twentieth Century. He died in 2003. Odd Arne Westad, FBA, is Professor of International History at the London School of Economics. He has published fifteen books on modern and contemporary international history, among them The Global Cold War, which won the Bancroft Prize, and Decisive Encounters, a standard history of the Chinese civil war. He also served as general co-editor of the Cambridge History of the Cold War. Reviews: 'A work of outstanding breadth of scholarship and penetrating judgements. "Those who do not have decent history in their heads will have bad."
By Marc Riese
This is a great book with a very ambitious topic. Despite some substantial flaws, I highly recommend it for getting an overview of, and a feeling for, world history. My review starts with what I liked, gives some general comments about the book and ends with a list of criticisms.

Part 1: General comments about the book and the authors’ approach to history

I read the third edition and, a few years later, the sixth edition. In 1260 pages divided into eight “books”, the reader is served scholarly history for a general audience and a framework for putting any particular historic subject in perspective. Roberts focuses on the general and essential aspects of world history: everything that shaped the future, everything that has lead us to where we are today. The illustrations are only black and white maps. The book includes a detailed index but no footnotes nor references in the text nor bibliography. This keeps the book tractable but renders it substantially less useful as a reference. The English is clear but refined, without fluff or informalities. This approach may not be accessible for those who require a light touch, many pictures and chronologies of monarchs. This book is unique in the plethora of world histories, most of which are either too short, dominated by illustrations or not very serious as a reliable framework for understanding history.

The book was originally written in 1976 by Professor John Morris Roberts and then revised by him, up to the fourth or fifth editions, before his death. Starting with the fifth edition, Professor Odd Arne Westad joined as co-author for revised editions, the sixth being written in 2012. For the sake of simplicity, this review refers only to Roberts as the author, but Westad has substantially updated the book. Westad claims that the sixth edition is “completely revised”. Fortunately, the large majority of Roberts’ text is untouched. Some important new findings are integrated, some topics extended, some texts shortened.

Roberts explains his goals and intended scope in the preface to earlier editions. Whether or not our own historical horizon is limited, we “strive to make sense of events by getting them `in perspective' and in fact make judgements about world history all the time. Our minds are not going to be kept empty of them, and those who do not have decent history in their heads will have bad.” Historical inertia is easily under-rated, for example, the historical forces moulding the outlook of Americans, Russians and Chinese for centuries before the words capitalism and communism were invented. Roberts’ history is a balance of attention given to historical inertia and change. He seeks to tell a unified story, to recognise that which had the widest and deepest impact, and not just to collect accounts of traditional themes. He avoids dates of events and names of individuals unless they have historical significance beyond their own century. He identifies the historical processes that affected the largest number of human beings, leaving substantial legacies to the future, and he gives their comparative scale and relations with one another. Although we know much about Louis XIV, the Chinese Revolution was more important. “The place for a comprehensive account of facts about the past is an encyclopaedia.”

The first sentence of Book One is a question, “When does history begin?” The book considers the development of human civilisations to the present. The book’s title refers to the World, and Book One explains how short the existence of homo sapiens is compared to that of the rest of the planet. In the preface to earlier editions was a controversial text from Roberts that was later removed. It stated that the origin of the universe, the formation of this planet, the start of life and photosynthesis and vertebrates are “not `history'. Common sense helps here: history is the story of mankind, of what it has done, suffered or enjoyed. We all know that dogs and cats do not have histories, while human beings do.” Historians write about the ups and downs of climate or diseases “only to understand why men and women have lived (and died) in some ways rather than others.” Thus, the World in the title is that of humanity and Roberts’ story begins with a detailed explanation of the origins of homo sapiens. Some scholars have claimed recently that “Big History” should start at the beginning of the universe, believing that the three billion year hegemony of bacteria on this planet must be given its due. Big Historians could also argue that Roberts is inconsistent: “the start of life and photosynthesis and vertebrates” are obviously among the most important processes that have affected human beings. Any controversy here would be easily resolved if the historian specifies his or her intended scope and meaning of the history of X, where X is humanity or cats or the universe.

We have many perceptions of the past that are in fact ahistorical. The question of what is history and what is relevant is often present in the text, directly or indirectly, and Roberts’ style is elegant and broad. He deals with the complexity or uncertainty of historical facts with the expression “X has at least some claim to Y”. Civilisations have “contents”, “political structures” and “roots”, and those of depth set “patterns” for the future. Some civilisations are more “impressive” than others are, i.e., they leave an impression. Some move by different “rhythms”. Some historical processes that have had less impact are still interesting because they show us the “possibilities” of humanity. History is at least partially about finding an intelligible narrative (or common thread or model) derived from the information available to us. It explains what was influential or essential about the past.

Granted that both authors are European and that the book was first published in the 1970s, one might ask whether this history is overly Eurocentric. This is sometimes the case, but in my opinion generally not. In the last chapter the author(s) do make some dubious statements (see criticisms below) and they repeat their point about Europe's important contributions so often that it comes off as chest beating. However, their focus is generally on that which is innovative (and thereby “progressive”), influential or essential in the evolution of human civilisation. The book gives each nation or civilisation its due according to these criteria. (Or at least roughly so. See criticisms below.) Civilisations that were less innovative, dynamic or influential get shorter coverage. Roberts is clear both about the important contributions of modern Europe and about the almost negligible historical relevance of most of Western Europe before 1000 AD. His “Europe” sometimes includes all former colonies and he makes clear how meaningless it is to think of Europe as one political, cultural or military entity over history.

To read this book is at times to be taken away by a vast current of names; be they names for places, regions, tribes, dynasties, sects, nations, things or individuals; be they familiar, exotic or completely foreign names. This is a unique sensation. It reminded me of Dorian Gray enjoying such exotica or of writers such as Shakespeare or E. R. Burroughs setting the mood with names. Each name has stories to it that carry over time.

This book says much, especially in the first half, about what civilisation is and how the definition has been refined. Whether an early culture counted as a nascent civilisation could be measured roughly by whether it had been able to free human resources from basic survival activities to achieve literacy. Other components of nascent civilisation were urban development, social-stratification, and a perceived separation from and domination over the natural environment. The civilisations that developed over world history can be measured by a combination of many parameters: education; levels of superstition; scientific, medical and technological understanding; artistic, cultural and culinary refinement; awareness of history and states of advancement; the place of women, children and the poor in society; tolerance and valuing of diversity; treatment of minorities (language, race, age, orientation, creed, physical disabilities etc.); the value of individual merit compared to individual birth or tribe, caste or clan; democratic institutions and influence of citizens; rule of law; separation of religion and state; separation of governmental powers (e.g., legislative, executive, judiciary); treatment of oppositional parties and non-governmental organisations; fair penal systems oriented towards rehabilitation; ethical maturity; secular humanitarianism; support of international justice and peace; and so on. As we “progress” we realise more recent measures of civilisation, such as whether members of a society can and do achieve fulfilment or whether a society takes responsibility for its sustainability with respect to future generations.

Part 2: A list of criticisms, ordered by relative importance.

(1) The first third of the book consistently focuses on the coming of civilisation, and Roberts explicitly addresses the meaning of civilisation and what it means to write a history of civilisation. In the second third of the book, the underlying thread is roughly about the advancement of civilisation, but with far fewer explicit remarks about this theme or about how this is to be evaluated historically. This is a pity because apparent choices of what material is included or excluded for the narrative are only implicit. (There should have been more about the Golden Age of Islam.) In last third of the book, the theme of civilisation is largely replaced with a less edifying focus on developments related to the great powers. This is a substantial inconsistency of the book; why is civilisation of central importance to humanity before but not now? Modern historical issues related to being civilised and the very mixed record of the West and the East on that front are given far too little attention. The authors mention only a few cases of important changes in attitudes towards gender or race equality, and nothing at all about homosexuality. Backwards trends in civilisation also get short shrift, especially in the last chapter on contemporary history. Roberts rightfully celebrates the Magna Carta as a grand advancement of civilisation, but no mention is made of historic attacks on habeas corpus (America, Guantanamo) and historic increases in torture committed or abetted by numerous colluding countries. (The rendition roster probably included Afghanistan, America, Australia, Britain, Canada, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Syria, Uzbekistan and others.) Roberts identifies social stratification as a basic ingredient of nascent civilisations in the beginning of his narrative, and yet trends in recent decades of growing wealth inequality accompanied by a shrinking middle class are given little attention.

(2) In the second half of the book, the British bias of the writer substantially effects the contents. Here are some examples. British influence on the American constitution is given overwhelming attention (p730). The substantial influence of others, e.g., Montesquieu, goes unmentioned. In the first half of the book, the author focuses on the development of civilisation as the main topic of world history, and yet Germanic contributions to civilisation after the Enlightenment and before the World Wars are given almost no attention. (Peter Watson has called this the “German genius” in a book on the subject.) The British bias becomes a turn off in statements such as the following (p809): “In Canada the outstanding difficulty was the existence of a French Canadian community in Quebec”. This perspective is silly and colonial. It would be just as silly to write that the outstanding difficulty was the existence of the English in Ontario.

(3) One anomalous remark in the epilogue is out of character with the entire book: “Few cultures, if any, have been able altogether to resist this forceful [European] tradition: China kow-towed to Marx and science long before it did so to the market.” (p1185) In this context, “kowtow” connotes servility, harks back to colonial days and implies condescension on the part of authors. This is inconsistent with the otherwise sober and generally neutral text.

(4) The book focuses on the narrative and therefore has few illustrations, but where an illustration is warranted, it should be legible. This is not the case for the maps with barely differentiated grey tones and text in microscopic font.

(5) Although the book is not just a history of ideas, the advancement of ideas is at the crux of human history and is always present in the text. The historian has the task of allotting the right amount of attention to historically important ideas and choosing which pioneers to mention. This is more or less achieved, but in particular the philosophical origins of secularism go largely unmentioned and the topic of secularism is overwhelmed by Roberts’ focus on empiricism and British Enlightenment heroes. Roberts considers the secular philosophy of a tiny number of (unnamed) thinkers in the early Enlightenment to be insignificant (p679, 684), but recent scholarship (e.g., from Jonathan Israel) has shown that their influence was substantial. Roberts states that “out-and-out atheism (together with rational determinism) had its first serious expression in the eighteenth century” (p695). This statement is at least grossly misleading. By typical definitions of atheism, Spinoza was atheist and was certainly considered to be an out-and-out atheist. The claim that “serious” rational determinism only started in the 18th century is simply false. When the secular society of the late 19th century suddenly appears in the narrative (p718), there is little explanation of its long-term origin. The Enlightenment origins and development of modern empiricism are given much more treatment, and yet here too the reader is left to remember that the scientific method also had adumbrations in ancient Egypt and Greece and the Golden Age of Islam. It is annoying to read of David Hume’s glorious contribution to scepticism when his 17th century precursors go unmentioned.

(6) The contributions to the Enlightenment of Italy, Holland, and of Germanic and other countries are overwhelmed by the focus on France, Britain and America. This is typical great powers skew.

(7) Unfortunately, the new editions have ditched the helpful page titles of previous editions. Some obvious candidates for revision remain unchanged in the sixth edition. The “very recent discoveries in the Transvaal” of chapter one have been very recent for many editions now. The last map of several maps in the chapter on ancient Greece is misplaced and should be among the first. Switzerland was indeed the last western European country to execute a witch legally, but the victim was a woman (Anna Goldi) not a man (p678). America was first populated 17’000 years ago (p28) or 20’000 years ago (p147).

(Could have been an) Excellent humankind history by someone who has a general comprehension of it
By Pilar
I bought this book because I wanted to have an overall view of how humankind has evolved from the beginnings up to recent times. Right now, I'm reading book three (The Classical Age) and I have to say that the book has not disappointed me at all: it gives a comprehensive view of how the first civilizations appeared and related to one another. All the different disjointed episodes I remembered from my distant school times, are now starting to fit together. As you can expect, the books doesn't dive in a myriad of small details or particular events and that's good, in my opinion, because you never lose sight of the general lines of evolution, which is the approach of this book.

Just a warning for non-English speakers (as I am myself): I find the book's language frequently convoluted, probably because its style has a literary lean. I'm not saying that I dislike it, but I do say that sometimes I don't quite understand what I've just read and have to go back and re-read it again.

Update: after finishing this book, I have to make my warning stronger. The academic language turns out to be annoyingly tedious too often throughout the whole book. In my opinion, things like "This did not, of course, mean that they did not stand, so far as nineteenth-century European were concerned, on the white man's side of the great distinction more and more drawn between those within the pale of European civilization and those outside it" could be expressed far simplier. I read some time ago "An Introduction to the History of Western Europe" and I've just read "Central Europe. Enemies, Neighbours, Friends" and from them (both are great, wonderful read) I can state that History can be described in approachable and engaging language.
Another drawback I find in the book is that its essay-like structure makes it difficult to go back for reference. What you get is what it's detailed in its table of contents. No more structure or themed divisions. The author links together seamlessly an issue with the next and quite often I found myself wondering "how was it that we've got here?".
For those flaws, I've decided to lower the book's rate from 5 to 3.

A very good overview of the history of the world with some valuable insights. If you aren't used to reading the writing of academics, with their long winded and often conditional sentences, I could image it being quite irritating, but I had no problem with it personally

Good intro to critical media studies
By Ela
Important summary of research on media. I am not convinced about certain theoretical statements but overall I think this is a well written and conceived book. A note of caution for a U.S. Undergraduate audience: the constant references to British television and media institutions may appear off putting or confusing.

Difficult to understand
By R. Bennett
I had this book assigned for a class, and contrary to the publisher's description, it was extremely difficult reading. The author engages in prolific polysyllabic pedantry, obfuscating the obvious with ostentation until this reader succumbed to obtusion.

Why use big words when simple ones will do?

The Unavailable Carl Barks (in color), by Kim Weston

Ten stories in this book, mostly unavailable since their original printings in comic books, are collected here together for the first time, along with a few other gems. Also included are several virtually unknown works by Barks which have not previously been collected anywhere. Four of the stories in this book appear in restored versions which are intended to showcase them as Barks originally intended for them to be seen. All of the stories are sourced from high quality masters except for three for which there are no known surviving masters. As collected in this book, newly colored and sourced from original masters, the stories look much better in this book than in previous printings. The 26 Barney Bear and Benny Burro stories, the bulk of Barks' non-Disney work, are in print in the USA in another book, The Carl Barks Big Book of Barney Bear; however, unfortunately, original masters were not used for their reproduction. The Unavailable Carl Barks also includes a comprehensive index to all of Carl Barks' non-Disney comics, and other introductory, historical, and background articles, totaling about 40 pages. Every story that Carl Barks wrote or drew featuring Disney characters during his career as a comic book creator has been reprinted, often many times, in comic books and albums and books. The Disney work is the most important of Barks' work, but Barks also wrote and/or drew 36 other comic book stories featuring non-Disney characters between 1943 and 1953; these have been less-well served in reprinting and are much less well-known. They are generally comparable in quality to the average of the Donald Duck work he was doing at the same time. A few of them are quite creative and delightful, and stand well with the best short story work he was doing at the time. Most of them have been out-of-print since their publication decades ago in comic books. This book is intended to remedy that situation.

About the Author
Kim Weston is a long time Barks fan and scholar who has contributed to Mike Barrier's magazine, Funnyworld, as well as the Barks Bibliography, and the book, Carl Barks and the Art of the Comic Book.  He was a contributor to the Celestial Arts book, Uncle Scrooge McDuck:  His Life and Times, and to Another Rainbow's Carl Barks Library.  He has contributed Barks and Disney information to the Overstreet Price Guide.  He is a contributor to Fantagraphics Books' ongoing series of The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library.  And he scripted The Ultimate Barks Collector gag page drawn by Walter Simonson.  Recently he has been contributing to The Carl Barks Fan Club Pictorial and he has also written occasionally on Barks' work for the past 45+ years, contributing to Barks and Disney scholarship mostly for a small audience in an Amateur Press Alliance.  That is where he commissioned Jack L. Chalker to write the article which was first published in that Amateur Press Alliance and which was later expanded to become Chalker's book, An Informal Biography of Scrooge McDuck.  That work was one of the influences that later inspired Don Rosa to do his own comic book series, the well-loved Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.   He authored the recently published The Carl Barks Index: A Concordance of the Comics of Carl Barks. The book indexes Barks’ complete Disney comic books from December 1946 to March 1953, plus the first 12 issues of Uncle Scrooge, extending that part of Barks’ work to June 1955, as published in the Fantagraphics Books: The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library Volumes 5-14 and also as in the original Comic Books. This time period and these books contain a majority of Barks’ very best work and includes the time period when Barks is generally considered to been at his peak of creativity, productivity, and quality of writing and drawing.

An absolute treasure for Carl Barks fans!
By I.H.
Apart from all the Disney work that Carl Barks did, he also wrote and/or drew 36 other comic book stories. Of them, 26 are available in the book "The Carl Barks Big Book of Barney Bear" by Craig Yoe, which contains versions scanned from the original comic books. This book by Kim Weston contains the other 10, as well as restored versions of two of the 26 in Yoe's book. All of them, except for three, are sourced from high quality masters and are beautifully colored, and look really wonderful! The other three are scanned from the original comic books. There are also short essays and restoration notes as well as a complete index to the Carl Barks' non-Disney comic books. Most of the stories in this book are from the years 1943-1945. In comparison, the Donald Duck story "Frozen Gold" was drawn in 1944 and "The Ghost of the Grotto" in 1947. I am personally very fond of the early work of Barks, and having all these non-Disney stories from the same era is an absolute treasure!

Barks genius in non-Disney Comics and Stories
By Amazon Customer
As I have said so many times before, Carl Barks never drew or wrote a dud. Before he was the chief chronicler of the Disney Ducks; Western publishing had him doing non-Disney comics and stories. Actually these non-Disney tales are the best these characters ever produced. I remember, as a child, the disappointment I felt when "Barney Bear and Benny Burro" were drawn by someone else. The only really good "Droopy tales" were drawn and scripted by Barks and the best non-Barks Droopy stories were written, if not drawn by Barks. This book collects those non-Disney Barks stories and a few that were only written by Barks. If you like the work of Carl Barks, you'll love this book. Highly recommended.

By Lisa
I am so disappointed that I paid for this booklet!!!! I can't even call it a book!!! PLEASE do not waist your money, the only color pictures are on the front and back covers. This book probably only cost 8 - 10 cents to make and should be given away to people, actually it shouldn't even be given away!!! I was so excited about receiving this book (which it again is not a book) and was so VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! I wish I could get my money back!!!!!

Something was missing
By J. K. Guillory
The last time I purchased the "Merck Index", in addition to the one-year on-line access there was a computer disk included that permitted one also to print monographs from the computer. That was omitted in this edition.

The Secret Lives of Girls: What Good Girls Really Do--Sex Play, Aggression, and Their Guilt, by Sharon Lamb

From playground games of "chase and kiss" to rough-and-tumble soccer games, from slumber party stripteases to romantic fantasies behind closed doors, author Sharon Lamb coaxes out girls' true stories with uncommon sensitivity and focus. The result of more than 125 fascinating interviews with pre-teens, teenagers, and adult women, "The Secret Lives of Girls" reveals the ways that girls use their minds and bodies for private sexual play, mischief, and hidden aggression.

To truly understand what little girls are made of, Lamb suggests, we must listen not only to what they say to us but also to what they don't say, taking into account their hidden selves and the lives that we adults don't see. Yes, girls are known to be "good," but they manage to act out in decidedly ungirlish ways and, despite many parents' fears, be the better for it. What's most remarkable about Lamb's conclusions is that we needn't join the chorus of voices deploring a "girl-poisoning" culture for damaging our daughters. Instead, Lamb finds reason to celebrate girls' resilience in the face of pressures to conform -- and she does it by listening to them and to the women they have become. "The Secret Lives of Girls" explores such in-depth key issues as:

Using aggression wisely -- when girls need to walk away or to settle verbally, and when to fight. Girls needn't grow up afraid of their own toughness and power. Building self-esteem, self-respect, and the ambition to achieve -- anger and aggressive feelings can be the impetus for creative and productive work. Eighty percent of female executives of Fortune 500 companies identify as having been tomboys. Participating in highly physical sports -- karate orboxing, or team sports like soccer -- teaches girls to feel that their bodies are competent, and that they deserve to take up space. Recognizing daughters as sexual beings -- their love of sexy dress-up, their yearning to understand their bodies and their sensual desires. Accepting some kinds of sexual play -- teaching the difference between fun and bullying; setting a positive and supportive tone from birth through the grade school years.

From tomboys like "Julia," who runs with the boys in the streets of New York to "Abby," who led a "naked parade," the girls who share their stories here describe a hidden but fascinating world made up of more than girlish innocence. "The Secret Lives of Girls" is a welcome and much-needed addition to the literature on girls' lives and culture. It celebrates girls' hidden strengths, play, and needs, and opens a door for parents that can teach them how to understand their daughters better and help them grow.

Amazon.com Review
Let girls be girls, counsels psychologist Sharon Lamb in her provocative book The Secret Lives of Girls. "I want to be able to free girls and women to take off the shimmering costume of a femininity that equals goodness--to acknowledge all aspects of being human," she writes.

Reporting on 125 interviews with girls and women, Lamb details and normalizes the sexual play and anger expressed in the privacy of girls' bedrooms and playhouses. The result is a groundbreaking and guilt-free guide for parents and teachers to assist girls in accepting their sexual and aggressive feelings. Her portraits of girls' exuberant sexuality ("practice kissing," "I'll show you mine") and spontaneous anger (not-so-dear diary, pranks, and "cutting down") are fresh and fascinating. One particularly memorable chapter describes games of "naked Barbie" and applauds the lessons learned about becoming a sexual person rather than just a desired object.

Lamb's observations are so sharp that readers may wish the chapters offering her smart suggestions for change were longer. Some readers may be surprised and others unsettled by the vivid scenarios Lamb portrays. Still, by listening to girls and telling their stories without judgment, Lamb invites them to stop living a double life that ignores their anger and sexual feelings. She provides parents and teachers with a powerful and practical model of how to understand and nurture the hidden and genuine strengths of every girl. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
Sexual play and acts of aggression are common for girls, according to Lamb, a psychology professor at St. Michael's College, but they are conducted in secrecy and often burden the participants with lifelong guilt. Based on interviews with 122 women and girls from a fairly wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds (29 were African-American and 22 Latina), this accessible and engaging study reveals that most girls experience sexual and aggressive feelings that fall outside cultural notions of the "good girl." Lamb examines different ways girls express their ambivalence about their sexuality and aggressiveness: keeping their play and their anger secret from adults, sexually torturing their Barbie dolls and pretending to be victims or "playing dead" so that they can experience sensual pleasure without being full participants. She draws a clear line between sexual play and coercion, but at the same time finds examples of behavior that could be considered coercive by adults but was experienced by the girls as positive and pleasurable. Advocating a broader definition of "good girl," Lamb argues that the current emphasis on caring and sensitivity strips girls of a complete self-image, one where their sexual and aggressive "impulses exist alongside their sweetness, competence, and ability to love and care for others." Allowing girls "to practice these feelings and emotions in spaces where adults acknowledge them and help shape their development" is essential to helping them realize their full human potential, says the author. From Library Journal
These are both excellent sociological studies about girls, women, and sexuality. In The Secret Lives of Girls, Lamb (psychology, St. Michael's Coll.) explores the idea (the myth?) of the "good girl." Many girls and young women, she attests, lead double lives, acting sweet and well behaved in public but sexual and aggressive and guilt-ridden in private. Using more than 125 interviews with girls and women of all races in 25 states, Lamb compellingly argues that girls are neither inherently "good" nor the passive victims whom some psychologists (e.g., Mary Pipher) have made them out to be. Teens and women often conceal their sexual desire and hunger for power via diaries and other secret means. Yet as little girls, they played healthy sexual games like catch-and-kiss and naked Barbies (though that finding pertains only to white America; Lamb found that African American girls rarely play sexual games with one other). Girls feel powerful (translation: good!) when they engage in mischief, swear, and successfully dominate siblings. Aside from revealing a misconception, this intriguing and significant book includes two chapters for parents, "Raising Sexual Girls" and "Raising Aggressive Girls." Highly recommended for social science and child-rearing collections. White, a freelance writer, reports on the high school slut. Who is she? Why is she so universal? What happens to her ten or 20 years after high school? White finds that girls seen as sluts always disagree with what the crowd claims they did, that the "slut" flourishes in a suburban landscape, and that, like anorexics, sluts are usually white. White's perspective is different from Naomi Wolf's in Promiscuities; Wolf concluded that "we" are all sluts, all "bad" girls, and that it's OK. Not so, says White. A deep chasm exists between "good" girls and girls perceived as sluts; it's "us" vs. "them," with girls as girls' worst enemies. While Wolf intertwined personal narrative with cultural history, White bases her conclusions on over 100 interviews with white, black, Latino, and Asian women with solid results. Teen aged Girls' Motivations and Why they're important
By A Customer
This book emphasizes individual stories, so no generalities can be drawn from it. However, it is so important that adolescent girls are able to accept their sexuality and grow into healthy and empowered young women. Any parent of a girl, pre teen or teenager, can benefit from reading this book and realizing that girls have curiosity and feelings that are important for their caretakers to respect and help discuss them in an emotionally healthy manner. The book helped me understand my long ago teen aged behavior from a different perspective than my family's Victorian ideas about discussing sexuality.

This book was disappointing...
By A Customer
I was really looking forward to reading this book, but was disappointed both by the content and the writing. Much of the book is made up of quotes from the women that Lamb interviewed, and most of the rest of the book seems to be Lamb's own clinical interpretation of these statements. I found her clinical opinions (e.g., something about believing it is ok for girls to shut the door of the bedroom and talk to each other with the lips of their vaginas) annoying and uninformed. In my estimation, the book mentioned, but underplayed the connection between early sexuality and previous or on-going sexual abuse... sure, it may be acceptable for girls to experiment sexually with each other, but it is the job of parents and psychologists to ensure that these behaviors did not stem from abuse. No, we don't want to raise women who are ashamed of their sexuality, but turning our backs on these behaviors is not always prudent, and may even be viewed as neglectful. I would also have found this book more useful if Lamb's findings had been integrated into other published research more often than into her own personal views.

Groundbreaking and Enlightening
By Diane Anstadt
Dr. Lamb has opened the doors to a secret world, that surely almost every female has entered into at one time or another, during those so-called "latency years." Lamb's vignettes from her many interviews are engaging, enlightening, and most definitely liberating. Acknowledging little girls as sexual beings, even from the start, and exposing sexual play and experimentation as a normal, functional part of female development, helps to unburden feelings of guilt, and to confirm what many women have known or wanted to know on some level, all along.
As a clinical social worker, working with children, I have always believed in the normalcy and universality of sexual play among children, but never had this confirmed so definitively until I read Sharon Lamb's book. In spite of my beliefs, my training has taught me to look for warning signs, to look for the abnormal, to suspect sexual abuse, each and every time a child draws sexual pictures, or plays provocatively or sexually with dolls in my office. Though I still believe I will continue to be cautiously aware, always cognizant of the subtle ways that children reveal the important parts of their world to us, I now feel that I am better able to incorporate this healthy perspective of sexuality into my diagnostic impressions, and in my work with children.
I highly recommend this book to clinicians, to parents of daughters, and to every woman. It is my impression, that almost every female can relate to one story or another that is told here, whether it is the naked Barbies, or stories of their own unique sexual or aggressive feelings or encounters in childhood. I believe that Sharon Lamb offers an enlightening, liberating perspective on female sexuality, and she paves the way for many more stories to be told.
