Another great book for counselors from Liana Lowenstein

I loved the first book: Assessment and Treatment Activities for Children, Adolescents and Families. Volume II is brimming with just as many fun, tried and true interventions that counselors can use in their work with individuals, groups and families. There are several treatment areas in this book from engagement and assessment to feelings expression, social skills, coping skills, self esteem and termination. The activities I find especially helpful are Red or Black, Anger Menu, Bag of Rocks, Cool and Calm Feather Breathing Dragon, and Inside the Special Box. This is such a wonderful resource book for clinicians--new and experienced alike! Other books on this topic I'd recommend are:

A sequel that doesn't disappoint!

I have had such great success with the other books by Liana Lowenstein, that I did not even hesitate to add this book to my therapy library. I was not disappointed! It was nice to get a fresh take on some social skills activities, and I really like the problem-solving activities, particularly ones that help the client cope with difficult feelings in the moment of therapy. I have worked with many clients who have a hard time identifying goals and making plans, and several of the activities in this book target just that. Self-esteem bingo is a hit among my child and teenage clients and a great way to address social skills as well as bolster self-esteem. These activities are easy to plan for and carry out, but effective and fun. A great combination for a clinician involved in a busy practice!

Highly recommended tool for practitioners...

I have been using Ms. Lowenstein's books for many years in my work with children and adolescents. These books are always within reach when I work with children as I feel they are quite instrumental in my work. What I like about them is that they focus on issues--divorce, grief, loss, bereavement, troubled youth--that most books don't discuss as clearly. In my work with various populations I found Ms. Lowenstein's activities to be readily adaptable to every situation.

What I like most about this book is that it is a volume where practitioners share tools that have been effective in their work with children, adolescents and families. Most books in the field can't be used as effectively as this book. It provides ideas that have been used successfully but allow for tweaking, if need be, for the practitioners current situation.

I highly recommend this book and Ms. Lowenstein's other books that I have used. They have been instrumental in my work and the success of the children and adolescents that I work with. Every practitioner needs to add these books to their therapeutic library as the books are the most practical resources for practitioners.

Wow. I can't put this series down. Jeffery starts his flung with Taylor and sets Mel into jealous rage..lol She was to be his girlfriend and wants to start going on dates. Jeffery doesn't know what to do. This can't be a good thing but he agrees to start dating but they are still not exclusive. And he still finds himself fantasizing about the girl from the smoothie shop. Tammy. With Taylor he knows that it won't ever be more then sex and so does she. That when she thinks of her Sexy young friend that lives below her penthouse apartment. She has an idea to set Jeff and her up. Little did she know they alreAdy knew each other. Taylor sets up a lunch to introduce then but the look in their eyes says they alreAdy do. Her neighbor is Tammy. The one he is fantasizing about it and Tammy wants to meet. There was something in his eyes. They hit it off.what is going to happen to Jeff? This is a crazy triangle.. I cUt wait to see how this ends.

Hagiography--well deserved

The writing is archaic--this biography was produced not too long after its subject's death. It's obvious, too, that the author worshiped Mr. Garrison. I guess if you're going to pick an American hero to worship, you could do worse. William Lloyd Garrison is one of the true moral giants not just of American History, but world history as well. You really should read the truly excellent biography of Garrison from the 20th Century: All On Fire: William Lloyd Garrison & the Abolution of Slavery.

Crusader Against Slavery

You may want to rethink your position if you believe most New Englanders were liberal abolitionist, if most northern christian churches derided slavery and free speech was or still is a constitutional right. The book is an excellent insight of one mans attempt to immediately end slavery and the struggles he ensued in the pre Civil War north.

This was a pleasant surprise!

Yes, it's a bit flamboyant. Yes, like most biographies of the time it's a bit short on details on the home front. Yes, like many biographies at the time, it does put some 'Born to Greatness' polish in the childhood introduction. BUT for all that, it is a solid biography of the man, and of the times. It does not make apologies for the failings of it's subject, or the times. And look who wrote it!

From the artisans who designed and assembled the outfits to the families who amassed fabulous wardrobes, Frick's wide-ranging and innovative interdisciplinary history explores the social and political implications of clothing in Renaissance Italy's most style-conscious city.

Frick begins with a detailed account of the industry itself―its organization within the guild structure of the city, the specialized work done by male and female workers of differing social status, the materials used and their sources, and the garments and accessories produced. She then shows how the driving force behind the growth of the industry was the elite families of Florence, who, in order to maintain their social standing and family honor, made continuous purchases of clothing―whether for everyday use or special occasions―for their families and households. And she concludes with an analysis of the clothes themselves: what pieces made up an outfit; how outfits differed for men, women, and children; and what colors, fabrics, and design elements were popular. Further, and perhaps more basically, she asks how we know what we know about Renaissance fashion and looks to both Florence's sumptuary laws, which defined what could be worn on the streets, and the depiction of contemporary clothing in Florentine art for the answer.

This is a great book( thesis). Very good reference material for clothing of this period. There is a lot of information about how fashion figured in the lives of the aristocracy in Renaissance Florence and about the guilds and craftspeople who made the clothes and accessories. There are lists of articles, including two Trousseaux, one for a wedding, one for a convent. There is information on fabrics and ornaments. There is info on sumptuary legislation and " fashion police". I wish it had more intimate descriptions of how the clothes were made, layered and worn, cleaned, etc. but I may find this in other books on the subject. This is a wonderful book that brings to life the sartorial atmosphere of the period. I highly recommend this book. I should like to add that there are very few illustrations, and the ones included are black and white renderings of paintings of the period, showing actual members of the elite families.

OUTSTANDING - Renaissance Florence students, take note!

I'm extremely impressed. I think this book would make an outstanding addition to any Renaissance-lover's, or garbaholic's, bookshelf.
It is not about how to make Italian-persona clothing. Instead, it focuses on how Florentines of the Renaissance used clothing to make social statements. Along the way, it examines some things that garbmakers would like hearing about (one table lists various color combinations found in gowns and linings), but mostly, it's about the sociology of fashion.
Chapters:
* Craftspeople and tailors (including how clothes-making guilds were organized and the role women played in these guilds)
* Tailoring Family Honor (how Florentines viewed honor and how they thought honor was expressed through clothing)
* Family Fortunes in Clothes (how much they spent, and a bit about the secondhand clothes market)
* The making of wedding gowns (you'll love learning how many opinions went into one and how totally political it all was)
* Trousseaux for Marriage and Convent (how they differed, and lists of what went into each)
And stuff about sumptuary law, information about layers of clothing, types of dyes (and an examination of mourning clothes), types of fabric, and clothes as depicted in art -- and how art might have distorted how people really wore clothes. Embroidery is also covered.
Needless to say, the painter Ghirlandaio features pretty prominently here. There are also b/w repros of portraits, unfortunately not super well detailed, but there are a few here I haven't seen before. There are also appendices that are very useful -- lists of currency and measures, categories of clothiers, yardage required for various garments, glossaries of what yardage terms meant, and a HUGE bibliography and glossary of terms.
It isn't a physically large book, clocking in at around 300pp, but it's very rich in detail, and the writing is pleasant to read. I'd definitely recommend this book to anybody wanting to immerse in the period -- and DEFINITELY for any Renaissance costumers out there. It might not be a bad idea to have some basic grounding in the period before reading this, but it's written well enough that if any is required, it isn't much.

Paolo Cadoni

Paolo joined the PRA (formerly FSA) in 2004 where he has held a succession of posts both in banking and insurance. He is currently a Technical Head of Department in the Prudential Policy Division leading on PRA's input into the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority s (EIOPA) Solvency II Committees and the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) Solvency and Actuarial Issues Subcommittee.

Since March 2013 Paolo has been the Chair of the IAIS ComFrame Field Testing Task Force which is leading the development of the IAIS Global Capital Standards. Paolo has also chaired the EIOPA Internal Models Committee since 2009.

Until March 2009 he was also responsible for the FSA's policy development and implementation of the internal model method (IMM) for counterparty credit risk for banks and investment firms. He also represented the FSA in the Overall Capital and Quantitative Impact Study Working Group of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and led the FSA's work on QIS5.

Prior to becoming a regulator Paolo worked as a financial modeller in the oil and power sector.

He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the ICMA Centre and an MSc in Econometrics from Southampton University

Motivational with Helpful Tips - Not an Epiphany on Dating

I'll preface this by saying the few dating/relationship books I've flipped through or read descriptions for often come across as very condescending to women. This is especially true if meant to unveil the "male mind" and give it to us straight - the "ugly truth" type of stuff. They make women feel bad for being women. You come away from just one little paragraph feeling like men essentially don't like women (beyond the physical). We're told we need to be more feminine, but also think like men, less clingy, but not too independent - etc. Here is a book which focuses less on how women need to change their nature, needs, desires, etc, as if we're hopelessly incompatible with men by nature, and instead it focuses on social skills & positive thinking modes for attracting & developing relationships with compatible men we actually like & who are worth OUR time & energy.

None of this is earth-shattering, mind-blowing secrets that will give you some epiphany on love & life. Instead, it reads like common sense, the kind many of us missed the memo on, so that it's not so "common" after all.

This book doesn't insult your intelligence, berate you for being a woman, tell you that you have to compromise your values, or leave with some sick feeling that manipulation of men & dishonesty with your own feelings/needs is the "secret".

The explanations of male thinking is also not "boys will be boys" trash that insists sexist and misogynistic behaviors are simply "biological" for men & have to be tolerated by women. Instead of making excuses, the author manages to be honest & fair in describing common male mindsets & how & why certain negative attitudes/behaviors are triggered (much as stereotypical female negative behaviors can be triggered by crappy moves on a guys' part). Since a relationship is a dynamic, it's only fair to adjust what you can control - yourself. So you learn very subtle methods to hone your social & dating skill to basically COMMUNICATE in a way that men in general will grasp correctly.

This is why the book had some good advice & was worth the read - the basic idea is how to communicate who you are, how you feel, and what you expect accurately & in a way that is understood by men. So it's not about changing who you are so much as really communicating it more clearly. If you're the kind of girl whose friends & family & co-workers wonder why you're single because they think you're the bees knees, but for someone reason men you meet/briefly date aren't valuing you the same way, then this might be a helpful read. You're probably not sending the signals which communicate who YOU are correctly; you're leaving false & bad impressions. So the book is really about being MORE yourself with communication that others understand & which creates the desired effect.

A book which is founded on ideas about good communication & keeping integrity is one whose advice I feel I can trust & recommend. It has a "win-win" approach that doesn't degrade men or women - how to get what you desire/need while giving someone else what they desire/need too. Building mutually satisfying relationships is the goal, not manipulating your dream man into marrying you (blech - what an idea!).

I appreciate that this book is about subtle nuances too. Often we don't know what we do wrong because it's not anything big but a subtle signal, and we don't know why our positive signals are ignored & that's because they are TOO subtle. This advice rang true because I've noted men in general communicate more with action & are generally MORE sensitive than women, meaning they need LOUDER positive signals & SOFTER negative ones. The author refers to this as the "fragile male ego" which is really SENSITIVITY.

It also rang true that we tend to attract someone when not interested in them because we're being our authentic selves - so how do we replicate that comfortable inner state & natural outer state so we can be our best, authentic selves when interacting with someone we are attracted to? How can we communicate that quickly, when we may have a few hours, minutes, seconds even to inspire a guy to pursue us? This book gives basic tips on how to do that.

I emphasize this book is very basic. Do not expect an epiphany. A lot of it may feel like reminders of things you know, deep down, but often forget or even compromise consciously.

A downside: the book directs you to online videos for more "secrets" which are really just teasers which lead you to another video they want you to pay for. I can see this as being an endless goose chase designed to keep you hooked & shelling out money while learning very little. I'd have more respect for the author & brand if they took a less scam-like approach. The video they want you to buy has a long intro to sell it which does the classic "play on women's insecurities & promise grand secrets to solve all of their romance problems in a matter of days" approach, one which many dating gurus do. I find it borderline insulting & I naturally expect it to under-deliver with super obvious "insight" repeated ad nauseam just as the rest seem to. This approach is unfortunate & detracts from a brand that has the potential to be more positive & actually useful, as opposed to the insulting junk I described at the outset.

So don't expect too much & don't shell out a lot of money. There are basic principles here which are useful as reminders & to polish your social & dating skills, but no more than that.

I have heard Matthew Hussey speak on the radio and I was looking forward to reading his book, bu I was dissapointed to learn that after every chapter I had to sign in to the websiteand become a paid member in order to look t th video that accompanied each chapter......I felt thi was more of a pay as you go long "help book" than anyhing else.......I was extremely dissapointed and expected more from the author.......

First, get a million dollars; now---

This book's approach reminds me of that old Steve Martin comedy bit, "How you can have one MILLION dollars, and NEVER pay taxes...first, get a million dollars. Now---"

The book is described as providing dating tips that still let *you* be *you*, and don't require any gamesmanship to meet and keep a quality man; neither claim turns out to be true. In a nutshell, the book's how-to can be boiled down to this:

1. Get an amazing, irresistible life.

2. Be an amazing, irresistible person.

3. Stop being insecure.

4. Chat and flirt with everything that moves, employing these specific strategies, types of come-ons, text messages and actions (which may totally seem like gamesmanship and manipulation, but trust the author, it's not).

Follow those four simple steps and success is assured. Here's an actual excerpt from the book---I'm not kidding. If you're drinking anything, put the cup down *now* or your keyboard will be drenched in a few seconds:

"The reason a guy gets hooked on one woman is not because she is *just sexy*, or *just playful*, or *just certain*, or *just feminine*, or *just bursting with integrity*, but because she possesses a unique combination of traits: the girl who is warm, has integrity, and can charm his family, then rips his clothes off in the bedroom and is a sexual goddess; the girl who is playful with his friends, can debate politics like a pro, but knows how to enjoy a lazy Sunday watching movies and eating pizza; the girl who is independent, kicks ass out in the world, but is feminine and loving with her man. Women like this cause an alarm to go off inside a guy's head and heart. Keep her, he thinks. This one's amazing!"

...and if she existed as a real person, she wouldn't be reading this book. I could just as easily advise guys seeking dating advice:

"The reason a woman gets hooked on one man is not because he is just sexy, or just playful, or just certain, or just masculine, or just bursting with integrity, but because he possesses a unique combination of traits: the man who is warm, has integrity, and can charm her family, then rips her clothes off in the bedroom and is a sexual god who's willing to invest all the time she needs in foreplay; the man who is respectful with her friends, can fix things around the house and in the garage like a pro, but knows how to enjoy a lazy Sunday at the museum or craft fair; the guy who is independent, kicks ass out in the world, but is gentle and loving with his woman and lavishes attention on her. Men like this cause an alarm to go off inside a woman's head and heart. He's just a character in a romance novel, she thinks. Be more realistic!"
