About the Author
Donald Finkel lived with his family in Olympia, Washington, and taught at The Evergreen State College from 1976 until his death in September, 1999. He is coauthor, with William Ray Arney, of Educating for Freedom: The Paradox of Pedagogy (Rutgers University Press, 1995).

A Good Book For Privileged Teachers

"Student-Centered learning" is the current fad in educational circles, and it's a great concept if you're fortunate enough to have students who are centered enough in their own learning to respond effectively to the great ideas presented in this book. However, way too many of us do not have the luxury of teaching at a college where, according to Finkel in the Afterword, there are "no requirements for students, no majors, and no grades." In other words, the students are there to learn, and unfortunately this isn't the case in most colleges today, especially the community colleges, where, on the average, students are consumers who view meaningful learning as a bump in the road to their success, especially when they work two full time jobs, have 17 kids, and insist upon taking 18 hours a semester.
While I enjoyed reading about Finkel's teaching strategies, I found myself wondering how all this would work with my students at a community college in South Carolina, a state with a horrendous secondary educational system, where the best and brightest leave for greener collegiate pastures in other states, and the local colleges are stuck with those passive souls who have never been required to perform and don't expect to do much of anything except to be entertained.
Don't get me wrong. Finkel has some wonderful ideas about student-centered learning, but when I have used this approach in the past, my students tended to respond negatively. On evaluations, they have said that my student-centered approach was "an excuse for not being prepared." "He needs to learn how to lecture," one of them wrote. In other words, these T.V. babies want to be spoon fed, and, although Finkel correctly argues that a great teacher "refuses to teach" in the traditional sense, the student evaluations tell the tale, and that's the tale that number-crunching administrators hear.
One of Finkel's great ideas is to write each student a letter (usually four to five paragraphs) in response to each paper that they write. If I did that, I would still be writing letters from two semesters ago, because at my college we are required to teach five classes each semester, and most of these are composition courses consisting of as many as 23 students, some of whom can barely write a sentence. In these courses there are usually six papers due each semester. Can you imagine writing 690 letters a semester? I can't. But then again, Finkel isn't teaching composition, and for that he is to be commended.
To be fair to Finkel, I must say that anyone who is foolish enough to get into the educational field and fortunate enough to teach in a place that genuinely values education over consumerism, this book is definitely for you.

Stop telling, start thinking

Finkel's book describes teaching techniques that he has derived from Jean Piaget's work on cognition and John Dewey's ideas about education. The ideas of "teaching with your mouth shut" are basically ways to teach without Telling. The author believes that Telling, straight lecturing to students about fact-based information, does not challenge our students to learn to think for themselves, a point that I agree with. The methods of teaching that he describes here focus on making the learner process, question, and draw conclusions from the information they were learning, which I believe will both teach them the information and teach them how to learn. Personally I envision the utopian education experience to be one where students learn how to learn, rather than just learn facts that they may or may not be able to apply to their lives and future occupations. As the author points out though, the methods described won't fit every teaching situation, so they must be taken as ideas rather than a cook-book for great teaching. As I read it I viewed his thoughts as jumping-off points for thinking about my own creative ways to teach without Telling. Many of the ideas that he suggests remind me of things that I do with my students (such as teaching through writing to and for your students), and some of his ideas have given me "food for thought" for creating positive changes in my classes. I enjoyed reading this book, and I think that any teachers who are interested in pedagogy enhancement will enjoy it as well. His writing style is more conversational than technical, which makes the text enjoyable to read even for someone who may never have taken an education course (i.e., many faculty members). I would like to see some of his suggestions become more commonplace in higher education, so I would highly suggest this book to teachers and anyone interested in improving education.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was one of England's greatest writers. Best known for his classic serialized novels, such as Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations, Dickens wrote about the London he lived in, the conditions of the poor, and the growing tensions between the classes. He achieved critical and popular international success in his lifetime and was honored with burial in Westminster Abbey.

Dean Morrissey has made up stories to go with his work ever since he first began to paint. Eventually he began writing and illustrating children’s books. The highly successful Ship of Dreams, a New York Times Best Illustrated Book, was published in 1990, followed by The Great Kettles, which won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. His other books include The Christmas Ship, The Moon Robber, The Monster Trap, and The Crimson Comet. Dean Morrissey lives on the south shore of Massachusetts with his wife and son, surrounded by many of the amazing contraptions that are found in his paintings.

Stephen Krensky is the author of over seventy books for children, including How Santa Lost His Job, an ALA Notable Book. He has previously collaborated with Dean Morrissey on The Monster Trap and The Crimson Comet. Stephen Krensky lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, with his wife, Joan, and their two children.

Glorious Treatment of a Holiday Classic!

A few years ago, I was in a production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL at my community's playhouse. One Sunday evening after the matinee and before the evening performance, I stopped in a Barnes&Noble and decided to pick this book up. It looked like a beautiful adaptation of a classic holiday story that had made my Christmases special for years.

I was not disappointed.

Just take a second now to look at the cover of this book. Whether you have it in your hand, or you look at it on Amazon, just glance at it for a few seconds. Do you see the intricate detail artist Dean Morrissey puts in his illustration? The bricks on the wall, and shadow on Scrooge's face. The snow on the pavement on the ground. This intricate attention to detail is present throughout all of the illustrations. They are gorgeous, and they bring vibrant life to Dickens' classic.

Now, for the treatment of Dickens' writing. This book is abridged, but is marvelously done. Many of the lines are Dickens' own, and all of the cuts come from lengthy descriptions that aren't essential to the story. Dickens' overall tone and beautiful use of language are present in this book, and they make the tale of Scrooge and his redemption as inspiring as it's ever been.

This is a nice introduction if you've never read the Dickens original (though I can't imagine anyone hasn't). However, if you have read it, this is a must-own if you value Scrooge and his ghosts as an essential part of the holiday season, as I do.

Appealing abridgement for picture book audience

A Christmas Carol has been a holiday favorite since it was first published in 1843. The original novella has been abridged to picture-book length with new illustrations, and a fine picture book it makes!

The text is not only shorter but also more accessible while still true to Dickens. For example, "Scrooge, a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire" has been simplified to "He was a scraping old sinner, hard and sharp as flint." The plot, too, is streamlined. Gone is Scrooge's little sister, Fan, and gone, too, is Belle, the girl Scrooge almost married, but the three Christmas ghosts appear in all their mystery and magic. Mysterious and magical, too, is the new artwork, combining watercolor, pencil, and pastel to brighten the joyful parts of the story and shadow the eerie events. The result is a winning presentation, sure to please.

I bought this to read to my third graders. We were comparing and contrasting this story with The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. They loved the story. It helped to talk about Charles Dickens, the era that he wrote the story, and why he wrote it. The pictures are nice, too.

About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor of Operations and Decision Technologies in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, where he has taught since 1975. Wayne received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from Yale. He has written the successful textbooks OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, PRATICAL MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, AND FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. Wayne has published over 20 articles in leading journals and has won many teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award four times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance and marketing.

Christopher J. Zappe earned his B.A. in Mathematics from DePauw University in 1983 and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from Indiana University in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Since 1993, Professor Zappe has been serving as an associate professor in the decision sciences area of the Department of Management at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). He has published articles in scholarly journals such as Managerial and Decision Economics, OMEGA, Naval Research Logistics, and Interfaces.

I like that book. This book is more theoretical. Every chapter has a case study which will help to understand the chapter. There is one deficiency in this book that it will not tell us line by line code details as compared to other books which is needed for a new programmer. This edition also give header file details in the end.

Good potential poor execution

This book had a lot of potential but the choppiness was distracting. It lacked depth. You never really get engaged with the characters. I'm not sure if it was poor editing or poor writing but the story felt rushed as if huge chunks of the story were chopped out of it. I really liked the hero and would have enjoyed more about him. The heroine was not fleshed out and there was no context to why she felt or acted how she did. Mostly I feel like I wasted my time waiting for it to improve but it didn't. And the abrupt action and ending just ticked me off. Hopefully this was a first book attempt and the author will improve as I mentioned I saw the potential it just didn't fulfill.

You know...I REALLY HATE that I have to review this book at a 3. There is such promise in the plot and storyline. But the writer was very stilted and the scenes were very sketchy. I give reviews like this because I am not trying to be a book basher. I just see such promise in this story but it falls flat. IF, and yes IF the author writes another story continuing this group, I will read it. No matter what I ALWAYS FINISH the book.

The question I ask is-Can the author write a sequel and it be better written and edited? Im going to follow and see. I do look forward to future writings.

Easy read.

A good, fast paced read but felt that it should have been longer with more background information about certain characters. Loved the concept of Alien/human relationship and the author can expand on the challenges that these differences and likenes represent and whether they can either enhance or detract from a physical relationship. Hope all of Zynn's crew find a significant other and can't wait to read about it.

out of step w/ other reviewers. I thought it was gross that the Hero had a years-long relationship w/ another woman, loving her deeply but offering nothing. That's because - Surprise! - he was married to the heroine. Secretly. As soon as the Other, Beloved, Woman was removed from the scene (cause she's abducted by a sheikh in another book), Hero turns up at Heroine's doorstep. She melts at his feet, has sex w/ him like there's no tomorrow, then he leaves divorce papers on her table?

Even though the secret marriage was to protect Heroine from said sheikh...Ick. No real love in either of these books, except that between the Hero in this one & the abducted bride in the other. In this book, "discovering" that you've loved each other all along - while falling in love w/ other women, having affairs, whatever - is just totally unbelievable and unenjoyable to me. Could not suspend disbelief on any level to engage w/ these characters.

You’re my gatekeeper, you’re my jailer - most loathsome Hero ever, no heart, no love

He’d sucked out every last shred of joy she should have been feeling about having this child, just as he was sucking her life dry.

It is impossible to care about this story. Paolo is the most contemptible Hero I’ve ever read - this is the lawyer that has a massive pro bono case fighting for other people’s rights and here he is, stripping the dignity and basic rights from Helene with every breath he takes. He forces Helene to leave her job, home and country to move to Milan to live with his family. And then he demands that Helene stop getting on so well with his mother, the adorable Carmela, so Carmela won’t be so hurt when he sends Helene away after having the baby. What a complete jerk.

‘You’re my gatekeeper, you’re my jailer. You’ve locked me up here until I deliver your child. But as for being a husband? I don’t think so. I don’t think you know the meaning of the word’ Helene may have had super-charged moments to off-set Paolo but she continues to drop at a moment’s notice to have sex. At no time she is ever a woman of depth that a reader can feel drawn to.

WARNING – SPOILER ALERT. I don’t write plots that have not been revealed by other reviews so I apologise for this one. These words are the only redeeming factor in the whole book.

Paolo and Helene wondered if there is something they may done to trigger off the miscarriage and she offers these thoughts – ‘Maybe our baby knew that things weren’t right between us. Neither of us was happy about being forced together the way we were. We wanted this child certainly – but maybe, the baby just didn’t want us’. There is no heart, no love in the story. The end still has Paolo at his demeaning best and only a minimum few pages have barest HEA. Icky as.

Hot and Passionate

When I read the first book in Trish Morey's series, Stolen by the Sheikh, well I was hooked. However, I knew that the "other side of the story" would be revealed in The Mancini Marriage Bargain.

In the first book one learns that loss of both life and marriage happened due to a business deal between father's that "went sour". Sheikh Khaled wanted revenge for the death of his parents and for being stood up at the altar in Stolen by the Sheikh.

In this book, Mancini Marriage, one learns the "other side" of the story. Paolo marries Helene 12 years earlier to save her from an arranged marriage. They live apart all of these years and when Paolo is the object of revenge and looses his current companion to the Sheikh who wants revenge; in the end he contacts his "wife on paper" for a divorce. From that very moment, the story begins and takes the reader on a high speed roller coaster.

Lack of communication and misunderstandings and an extreme sensual pull between the main characters Helene and Paolo plus the knowledge of a pregnancy, complicate everything.

This is a wonderful story, one not to be missed and I would suggest tissues for your tears.
