Zaidan’s prose is colorful and his writing conveys both character and mood. Behind the melodrama lies a deeper plot and a unique view of Christian Spain in the Dark Ages, with its forcibly converted Jewish minority and its feuding Roman and Gothic ethnic groups. Zaidan’s depiction of the Dark Ages rings true. The characters are rich and memorable. Zaidan’s words carry meaning for a modern world that remains caught in the dramatic struggles begun over a millennium ago.

About the Author
Jurji Zaidan (1861-1914) was a prolific writer and one of the intellectual leaders of the Arab Renaissance. He wrote twenty two acclaimed novels spanning Arab history from pre-Islamic to modern times. In their unique mix of history and adventure, they have often been compared to the works of Alexandre Dumas and Sir Walter Scott. They have been reprinted every decade or so in the Arabic-speaking world and one hundred translations were made of these novels into nine languages. This is the first translation of any novel into English by leading scholar and teacher of Arabic litterature, Professor Roger Allen of the University of Pennsylvania.

Jurji Zaidan's writings

Appreciating Jurji Zaidan's historical novels requires understanding of context. Roger Allen's translation of the "Conquest of Andalusia" provides this context richly. The footnotes and the Afterword and Study Guide attest to Allen's scholarship and should help the reader grasp the significance of Zaidan's work. The "Conquest of Andalusia" sheds an early light on complex relationships among the monotheistic religions in Spain over several centuries.

An excellent work, of interest and readable for teens as well as adults and scholars.
Unfortunately the publisher's editors did not know that Andalusia and Andalus are not the same place. Allen knows this as he explains it in another of his works. Andalus is the historic period of Muslim Spain, Andalusia is a modern district in Spain.
Having corrected that, we need to see how this book serves to correct another misconception. This book is a fictionalized account about a real period of time and real people during the last days of the Visigoth Kingdom in Spain. While we often think of the Dark Ages when the Visagoths are mentioned, it should be noted that according to the Visigothic perspective, it was not the Dark Ages, it was their Golden Age.
This is an excellent book for bringing this period of history to life. And it is just good relaxing reading.

From cover to cover the book is captivating!

The book is amazing, there is something about his style of writing that is beyond description.
Not boring for a split second, due to the style of Zaidan.
The way he keeps jumping from one character and the events surrounding it, to another character with the events surrounding it, keeps the story alive, all the events are tied together and despite all this moving among the many events taking place at the same time and the many characters, the reader does not get confused or bored. The author is unique for very few writers are able to do that, I have put down and never continued to read many, many books that have tried to do this and failed!
I loved the novel, the descriptions were so alive, you felt as if one of the characters living among them, it was hard to put the book down and sadder to finish!
As for the story, it is a fictional romantic novel that is woven around real historical events that did occur, it is both enjoyable and educational!
