Though Lucky herself is a fully imagined, flawed but endearing character, the constant reliance on luck to shape the plot combined with a disappointing ending make this a mediocre read at best. A Somewhat Entertaining Read

I don't want to give anything away with regard to this book because I hate it when people do that, so I won't. I'll speak in sweeping generalizations instead.

This book was an entertaining read at times but I found it a bit too contrived for my taste (I'd already figured out the ending 50 pages into the book.) I found the character "Lucky" predictable, arrogant, dull and very self-centered. I found it difficult to care about her, I really did. I mean, here she was having what I consider a very charmed and wonderful life (particularly when compared to the lives of most other people)but all she seemed to do was whine and complain and wonder why it wasn't better. Don't get me wrong, she did experience genuinely difficult and challenging moments but I just couldn't figure out why she wasn't dancing around joyfully during the times between them. She never seemed to have a truly happy moment and I kept wondering, why?

There's a quote in this book that's used over and over again and is attributed to this book: "We are not human beings seeking a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings undergoing a human experience." This is not an original quote or concept. It is one that has been used throughout history by many spiritual philosophies, texts and leaders, such as "The Science of Mind" by Ernest Holmes, several writings and teachings of Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer and Don Miguel Ruiz just to name a few. It would have been nice for the author to give credit where credit is due even though this book is a work of fiction.

I was truly hoping that this book would be an undiscovered gem for me but I never connected with it. Oh well, better luck next time I suppose.

A must read for women of all ages!!!

A friend of mine recommended this book to me and I bought it from Amazon. Having recently gotten out of a long term relationship myself I could completely relate to Lucky Boyce's character and her struggle to start life from scratch again. As you read the book u realize that even though the problems that Lucky's character faces are different from ones we face in our day to day lives but sum where sooner or later our inner demons catch up to us and then there is no choice but to face them head on. And that's exactly what Lucky does.....We all find some thing in our lives that helps us find our inner strength for Lucky Yoga gives her the calm and the peace required to face her fears. Personally for me meditation and yoga have been very therapeutic too and hence I loved this book. For those who are new to healing effects of yoga this book will definitely be an eye opener. Bottom line this book was money well spent for me and I would definitely recommend it to one and all. Hats off to Bapsy Jain for writing a book with such well defined characters and a gripping story that makes it difficult to put down. I recently read on Bapsy's website that she is working on a sequel to this book and I cannot wait to read it.

A very good read.

A great book for all readers, despite that Penguin appears to target young women in particular. Lucky, the protagonist, grows from an ambitious young professional to a fully-mature woman. But the twists and turns and interesting characters she meets along way will keep any reader turning pages. A mystery? Absolutely. A coming-of-age novel? Sort of. A novel with a message? Yes. But above all, a page turner. A very entertaining book.

Alvin M. Josephy, Jr., a leading historian of the American West, was the author of many award-winning books, including The Patriot Chiefs, The Indian Heritage of America, Now That the Buffalo's Gone, The Civil War in the American West, 500 Nations, and A Walk Toward Oregon. He was a vice president and editor of American Heritage magazine, the founding chairman of the board of trustees of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and president of the Western History Association. Josephy died in the fall of 2005, shortly after completing this book.

Frenchmen, Bears, and Sandbars

Vine Deloria, Jr.

Vine Deloria, Jr., is a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Fort Yates, North Dakota. He is perhaps the only American whose educational history ranges as far and wide as a New England prep school (Kent), the U.S. Marine Corps Telephone Repair School in San Diego, the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, and membership in the faculty of a prestigious state university.

Deloria is currently retired professor of history and an adjunct professor of law, religious studies, and political science at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Best known to the general public as an author (his works include Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto, 1969; Red Earth, White Lies, 1995; among many other books), he has been a college professor since the early 1970s and an activist in Indian affairs since the 1960s. From 1964 to 1967, for example, he was executive director of the National Congress of American Indians; in the mid-seventies he founded and chaired the Institute for the Development of Indian Law; in the nineties, after serving as vice chairman of the Board of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, he became chairman of its Repatriation Committee.

Vine Deloria, Jr., has received honors early and often for his work as a writer and scholar, but unique among these was his nomination in 1974 as one of eleven "Theological Superstars of the Future."

While his Sioux forebears chose confrontation in their encounter with Lewis and Clark, Deloria chooses a potent sense of historical irony.

Frenchmen, Bears, and Sandbars

Exaggeration of the importance of the expedition of Lewis and Clark is a typical American response to mythology. We prefer our fantasies in opposition to the facts of life. It was a routine venture now revered because we desperately need to have a heroic past, since that pleasure is denied to us in the present. The expedition was initiated following Jefferson's finesse of Congress and the Constitution in the purchase of a mere claim by France that it "owned" a substantial portion of the North American West because a Frenchman had first set foot on lands drained by the Mississippi. Not only did the expedition seek a practical water route to the West Coast with the eventual goal of opening the Pacific to American commerce, but Jefferson also needed to prove that the purchase of an unknown territory was not a white elephant. (He did, however, caution Lewis and Clark to be on the lookout for mammoths while en route.)

Since traditionally historians have understood the journey as the first effort by civilized men to pierce the unknown West, we often tend to clothe the accounts of Lewis and Clark in more heroic terms than they seem to have deserved. Much good history falls by the wayside when we stress the heroics and neglect the context of their journey in our understanding. The expedition actually seems to have been a tedious march from one place to another made known to them by Indians and French traders, with an occasional incident to testify to the strangeness of the land and the unique challenges that the West presented.

After reading through the journals edited by Elliott Coues, my impression of the memorable experiences of the expedition, the things that would have remained with its members years after their return, revolved around three major topics, although I must admit that a strong case might be made for several other themes. But the things that impressed me were the fact that Frenchmen had already explored much of this region so that it was reasonably well known to many people, that there seemed to be an oversupply of bears on the prairies and bottomlands, and that sandbars posed a continuing barrier to the expedition, making the development of a heavy and easy commerce with the Orient via an inland waterway impossible. Indeed, travel later to the Montana area depended heavily on the spring snowmelt and required special flat-bottom boats.

The accounts of the journey to the West Coast contain those wonderful naïve observations that always come with first discovery. Consequently the responses of the Corps of Discovery to these new experiences provide us with good insight into their feelings and what they believed they were doing, and record the occasional misfortunes of the group, which became traumas because they were unexpected. Entries on the return trip record fewer surprises and illustrate the confidence and sometimes arrogance that experience often brings.

That they had the confidence that they could split the little company and explore different river systems with the expectation that they knew the land so well that they could meet again in more familiar territory suggests that they felt they had conquered the West. The final report would therefore be couched in the optimistic terms of men who had overcome severe hardships and now stood ready for another challenge. They had breached the unknown, albeit with considerable assistance from the local inhabitants, and now believed in their own superiority, a mood that would shortly energize people to emulate their feats and bring about the ruination of the Great American West.

Before we examine the Indian understanding of the expedition, let us walk with the explorers on their first encounter with the land and its peoples. We have traditionally been taught to believe that the Lewis and Clark expedition was the first penetration of white men into the western lands. This belief is totally unfounded. The locations of the Mandan villages, scattered from the present North Dakota-South Dakota line along the Missouri River to some distance above present-day Bismarck, were already common knowledge. French and British traders had already established a thriving commerce with these villages and the sedentary Indians were accustomed to dealing with foreigners.

A good portion of the trip while moving through wild and unoccupied country did not involve discovery of the West but merely followed paths already well established. Thus when the expedition visited the Yankton Sioux camp, the Indians were flying a Spanish flag, and it is well known that these Sioux had attended the British conference at Albany prior to the American Revolution. They would also send warriors to support the British during the War of 1812. The coastal tribes in Washington and Oregon had already been visited by the English and Spanish and had routed the Spanish expansion.

More important, however, was the presence of French trappers in the area. The growing population of half-breeds of French-Indian heritage, some people representing second and perhaps even third generations of men out on the plains, indicated that white men had lived among the tribes for a considerable period of time. Above the great bend near present-day Pierre, South Dakota, the expeditioners visited a Frenchman's house that had no protective palisade, testifying to the fact that the French had successfully melded with the Indians long ago.

French colonial policy had encouraged intermarriage with the Indians and the exchange of children to create kinship bonds with the eastern tribes. The French sought to create a new kind of society of mixed Euro-Indian genetic background that would and could hold the lands claimed by the French king under the Doctrine of Discovery by appealing to their common ancestry. This class of people was now temporarily loyal to whoever could enhance their fortunes. Most of them had extensive experience in wandering the western lands, and, in sharing their knowledge about the land and its people, they enabled Lewis and Clark to anticipate some of the problems that lay ahead. But they had no loyalty to the Americans, nor would they have for some time to come.

The Frenchmen represented a good deal more than easing the psychological burdens of the unknown lying ahead for the expedition. Indeed, their presence indicated the existence of a society in which manufactured goods were becoming increasingly valuable, as steel knives replaced flint weapons and guns were coveted for both hunting and war. The value to be given in exchange for these industrial products would have to be the skins and hides of animals that were temporarily valuable when beaver hats were stylish or when there was a lack of available leather on the European markets. The land could sustain the wildlife it had but was not so productive that animals could replenish their numbers in the face of extensive hunting above and beyond simple human subsistence. The primary objects of Indian commerce were the hides and skins of the animals that also inhabited the land, and there were a finite number of these creatures, although at the time the herds of grazers seemed without number.

Actually in the journals we find few references to large herds of buffalo or even to the massive dams and villages of the beaver, whose pelts would later be the primary items of trapping and trading. Beaver seem to merit sparse attention when recording the fauna of the region. There are probably more references to rattlesnakes than to beaver, since the men seemed almost hypnotized by these serpents, hardly an item of trade. Lewis and Clark almost certainly saw the wildlife as a barrier to be overcome and not as commodities that would constitute the major portion of trade for the next eight decades.

Some of the half-breeds were not descendants of the local tribes. Pierre Dorian, for example, seems to have been part Iowa Indian, as does his wife. Here we see the results of the displacement of tribes in the Midwest who had been trading with the French and British for more than two centuries. Although there had been no removal treaties affecting the midwestern tribes at that time from which these people might have been fleeing, the fabric of their communal life had long since been torn apart by intermarriage and trade wars. As members of the eastern tribes had experienced the course of empire, they joined in and moved west to become a part of the impending invasion and serve as bicultural brokers in the transactions that lay ahead.

This new class of people would also help open the Pacific Northwest to commerce and exploration. As the Hudson's Bay Company extended its trading posts and influence in the western Rockies and Columbia basin, it employed Iroquois voyageurs who had only a smattering knowledge of the Christian religion but loved to sing Catholic hymns, relying on their rhythms to measure the oar strokes of the trade canoes. These hymns would later inspire the Nez Perces and Flatheads to send a delegation to St. Louis in search of these power songs, triggering the missionary movement toward the Oregon country that ended in disaster for all concerned.

Could these people be described as an indigenous population as we think of one today? To the expedition they were indistinguishable from the local tribes except for the obvious language differences and the warlike proclivities of the tribes claiming and defending extensive territories. Certainly they were seen as a different class from tribal Indians in Canada, who eventually become known as the Metis (mixed-blood people), the constituency of Louis Riel, who regarded themselves as equal members of Canadian society. They appear later in the 1870s as invaders of the northern hunting grounds, feared and resisted fiercely by the tribes living in the United States. Annually they brought large numbers of hunters with freight wagons and families south across the border to hunt buffalo when their own herds had been thinned out, thus escalating the depletion of the northern buffalo herd more rapidly than expected.

Certainly the invasive half-breeds played a critical role in arranging the first treaties between the United States and the northern Plains tribes, treaties incidentally negotiated by William Clark after his exploring days were done. As time went on American whites became the scouts, hunters, and interpreters for subsequent expeditions mounted in St. Louis and Leavenworth, and with some exceptions the French-Indian half-breeds declined in importance. Their descendants today dominate tribal politics in most of the Great Lakes and Plains tribes. Indeed, for some tribes, having French ancestors rather than English is a sign of distinction.

Think of what these people represented, however, and we begin to visualize an alternative possible scenario for the settling of the West. The French colonial policy was to encourage intermarriage with the natives and the exchange of children who would be raised in a different society so that over time they would help create a society that treated lands, resources, and people in a much different manner than the English/Americans did. Would the interior of the United States have been developed with a goal of maintaining a sustainable yield of products rather than of exhausting the resources? Would treaties even have been necessary if the various tribes had adopted enough of French culture that they adapted their institutions to resemble those of western Europe and guaranteed equality in both law and custom to new settlers of the region?

Could a mixed-blood government have dealt with the United States on better terms? We would like to think so, although the experiences of the Five Civilized Tribes suggest otherwise. But the Five Tribes possessed valuable farming lands in the South, whereas the northern plains hardly offered the settlers much comfort, so the demand for land would not have been as intense. To what degree would mixed-bloods' willingness to accommodate themselves to technology and opportunity have produced an ecologically sound society?

This distant prospect seems not impossible if we read the journals of the trip. From St. Louis to the Mandan villages it appears that the Frenchmen had a vital place in the region's social environment. Quite casually we learn that the French were building houses and settling in near the Big Bend without any immediate or prolonged conflict with the tribes using the same area as hunting grounds. We can understand the sense of relief felt by the men whenever the expedition came across Frenchmen, as if they had brought the entirety of the European perspective with them. That the Frenchmen felt entirely at home and possessors of the same knowledge of the land as the Indians suggests that in large part the Gallic colonial goal had been achieved.

The experience of the Yankton Sioux with the French and Americans is interesting and demonstrates how deeply the French had intruded into Indian life. As the Corps of Discovery approached the Yankton Sioux territory they encountered Pierre Dorian, Jr., the son of their interpreter who had ensured that they receive a warm and friendly reception. Instead of the haughty attitude that Lewis and Clark often showed toward Indians, negotiations with the Yanktons went smoothly. Their generosity in giving the chiefs both medals and clothing impressed them. A Yankton chief summarized the difference: "I went formerly to the English, and they gave me some clothes; when I went to the Spanish they gave me a medal. But nothing to keep it from my skin; but now you give me a medal and clothes."

It is an eye opener. I have read several books on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, but this tells a different reason for the expedition and the process by which the expedition was accomplished.I have no reason to doubt the facts given in the statements of our Native Americans.

A requisite resource, indispensable for any ScrumMaster serious about becoming a true Agile "change agent"!

I met Stacia Viscardi for the first time at the 4th Open Scrum Gathering hosted by the Scrum Alliance in Boulder Colorado in late 2005. I also had the good fortune to work with Stacia for a couple of days in April, 2013, when she trained an organization on Scrum and Agile principles, after which I remained on-site as their Scrum Coach. When Stacia told me that she had written this book (scheduled for publication that week), I must admit that I had some immediate concerns...

The sheer number of books written about Scrum is daunting, with many of them overlapping in suspiciously similar ways. I reviewed "Essential Scrum: A Practical Guide to the Most Popular Agile Process" by Kenny Rubin in late 2012, concluding my review by saying "I pity anyone that intends to publish a book on Scrum in the near future (this act will be impossible to follow for a very long time!)". I downloaded and read the Kindle version of "The Professional ScrumMaster's Handbook" from Amazon the instant it was available and thankfully discovered that this concluding comment in my review of Kenny's book was dead wrong.

Where Kenny's book is a complete compendium on Scrum roles, events and artifacts, written in a way to benefit those new to Scrum as well as seasoned Scrum veterans, "The Professional ScrumMaster's Handbook" fills a different, very real, former vacancy in the world of Scrum literature. Although Stacia's book also covers all of Scrum quite thoroughly, it relates everything directly to the ScrumMaster role. Stacia and I both began practicing Scrum in 2003 (although she began several months before I did). She's been ScrumMaster and Coach for numerous teams since then and has learned the ScrumMaster role the hard way - by comprehending how to (in her words) "transition THROUGH" Scrum, rather than "transition TO" Scrum, which is a common misconception many ScrumMasters hold about the essence of this challenging role.

In the "Preface" Stacia expresses a very real concern I share about the current negative effect of the "rampant misuse and misunderstanding of Scrum". She bares her soul about the original "Scrum Values" and shares many personal insights that only arrive after years of living the ScrumMaster role (like differentiating between "dysfunctions" and "true constraints"). Although the book is packed with stories offering practical responses to some of Scrum's most challenging situations, it more importantly communicates the true core traits required to become a successful ScrumMaster.

Because of the depth of this book, I would not recommend it for new ScrumMasters, but would instead encourage ScrumMasters that have been practicing Scrum a year or more to read it cover to cover (and re-read it as they evolve into real ScrumMasters). At this stage of "ScrumMastering", Stacia's wisdom can effectively guide ScrumMasters who are becoming truly hopeless struggling with more and more seemingly irremediable Scrum fallout (while sparing them the pain Stacia has already gone through on their behalf, paving the way for them to succeed). In the book, Stacia likens the ScrumMaster to the skilled rider of a horse, implying techniques for dealing with the horse at any given moment in a variety of situations. Stacia extends this comparison to present some of the worst Scrum "horse" behaviors, common situations causing them and invaluable techniques for dealing with them in a variety of real organizational contexts.

Also described are fictional ScrumMaster "personas" many of us have encountered (or have been or still are!), identifying the shortcomings for each. "The Professional ScrumMaster's Handbook" is a highly-recommended, real first, unlike other Scrum resources before it. It shares both practical and spiritual lessons flowing from deep personal knowledge absorbed over a very long time in Scrum's trenches, coming from a ScrumMaster that, as Ken Schwaber (co -inventor of Scrum) would say, really "gets it". Bravo!

Great Resource!

I think this is a fantastic resource for any practicing ScrumMaster. In addition to reviewing the basics of Scrum (history, artifacts, principles, etc) Stacia offers real-life, practical advice that you can implement in your daily life as a ScrumMaster. It is filled with actual examples from Stacia's years of experience. There may be difficulties and roadblocks that you encounter as a ScrumMaster that you think are unique or unsolvable, Stacia addresses them all in this book. I found it invaluable, needless to say I've highlighted and bookmarked many a page.

It should also be noted, Stacia is a great writer, her tone is fun and engaging. She's includes personal anecdotes and experiences that really draw you in. Two thumbs up all around.

If you only buy one book on the role of the ScrumMaster, buy this one!

In my 10+ years of working as a ScrumMaster, I have read numerous books and papers that have attempted to describe the role of the ScrumMaster and how to best fulfill it. To my dismay many of the works by prominent names in the Agile Community were a complete waste of time. Others were adequate, but none has been as thorough, thoughtful, and useful as The Professional ScrumMaster's Handbook. Stacia Viscardi draws upon a wealth of real-world experience to provide not only a comprehensive guide to all of the Scrum meetings and artifacts, but also an in-depth guide to the philosophy and principles necessary to be great team facilitator.

I disagree with the reviewers who don't recommend this book for beginning ScrumMasters. I found that Chapter 1 provided a clear, concise description of the process, the roles and responsibilities, and the required meetings, of a Scrum team. This information could provide even a complete novice with a solid foundation upon which to get started. The rest of this manuscript provides insight into the challenges one can expect to meet and how to best address them. I would have loved to have had this book to serve as an additional "Scrum Buddy" in my formative days as a ScrumMaster.

As an experienced practitioner, I found that this work challenges me to continue to grow and increase my skill-set in order to help my teams to provide the greatest possible value to our organization. I particularly liked the coaching provided on ways a ScrumMaster can assist in transitioning an existing culture to Scrum-based set of values, beliefs and behaviors.

The author's ability to present an enormous amount of complex ideas in a manner that is easy to grasp quickly, makes this work a thoroughly enjoyable read. Her wit, candor and writing style, make this book feel more like an easy conversation with a great mind, rather than a dry lecture, a boring manual, or a sales pitch. My only complaint with this book is that it wasn't around sooner!

Jacqueline Bussie is Director of the Forum on Faith and Life and Professor of Religion at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. She has a BA, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Davidson College; an MA in Religion from Yale University; and a PhD in Theology, Ethics, and Culture from the University of Virginia.

Compulsively readable!

She has taken a subject that could be difficult, in fact would be difficult had she not placed it inside fascinating story after fascinating story. She grabbed my attention with the very first line. Not only has she challenged me, she has awakened something new in me: a desire to speak truthfully about how life is sometimes horrible, even for the most faithful followers of God. I've spoken my last well-intentioned pious "comfort lie" to people who are hurting. Thank you Dr. Bussie.

Outlaw Christian comes as a breath of fresh air for anyone who has ever felt angry at God, anyone whose faith is full of doubt, anyone who cannot simply “get over” a painful loss, anyone who struggles to honestly admit how imperfect life can be. Digging deep into messages from the biblical tradition that are too often overlooked, Jacqueline Bussie offers hope to those for whom Christianity is not a set of feel-good, cliché-sounding beliefs, but rather a path for seeking peace, justice, integrity, and healing in a world of overwhelming unfairness, suffering, and violence. In many ways, Bussie’s book popularizes the kind of critical thinking and questioning that many scholars in the field of religion encourage—the kind that has the potential to make one’s relationship with one’s sacred values more authentic, honest, and life-giving. Personally, I no longer envision God as having human-like qualities (e.g., as acting, knowing, intending, loving like people do). Yet Bussie’s theology is flexible enough to allow for (and even affirm) the kind of exploration and not-knowing that my unconventional spiritual proclivities require. Buckle Up

Curious about the following expressions: composting pain, steward of suffering, radical listening, hope sleuth and shedding secrets? If so, buy this book! If not, buy it anyway! Then, buckle up for the ride of your life.

I consider myself a reasonably awake, believing Christian yet while reading this book, it was as if I'd taken The Red Pill (think Matrix) and started seeing a whole new reality. Scales came off and so did the shackles. Some anyway. Dr. Bussie's words not only liberate but challenge, affirm and inspire. Her truth telling is beyond refreshing- it's deeply necessary. For our culture...for our world. She is clearly a scholar yet writes a surprisingly accessible book. The biggest compliment I can give is upon finishing, I wanted to reread it immediately. This time, highlighter in hand.

It has been said that the glory of God is man - and woman - fully alive. It doesn't matter if you're disenfranchised, disconnected, disbelieving, doubting or somewhere else in a different pattern of alliteration, this book will set you on a path to full aliveness. And it may just launch you there.

About the Author

Honbo Zhou, Ph.D., is currently the general manager of Foton Fleet Telematics Co. Ltd. He was chief software scientist of TongFang Co. Ltd., executive director of the board and chief technology officer of Technovator Pte. Ltd., and chief operating officer of TongFang Software Co. Ltd. Dr. Zhou worked as a research associate on grid computing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory after receiving his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Zurich in 1993. He also worked at IBM, BEA Systems (now Oracle), and other companies in the United States as a senior engineer or manager. He participated in the ASCI Blue Pacific project building the world’s fastest supercomputer in 1996 while at IBM as a software team lead and coordinator for its job scheduler. He masterminded and built a high-performance/cloud-computing system that accomplished the complete annotation of the human genome for the first time in the world while working at a startup in Silicon Valley, which was reported by media such as the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN. He has been one of the pioneers of the Internet of Things and machine-to- machine computing, leading a team of 100-plus developers to build TongFang’s flagship ezM2M Middleware Platform for dozens of vertical IoT applications since 2003, and he has authored two related books in Chinese. He is a frequently invited speaker and evangelist of IoT and cloud computing, adjunct professor of several universities, and vice president of the Middleware Association, and he is a member of a few other related professional associations in China.

One of the best IoT books I have read so far

If you are reading this review, you probably already heard something about IoT, and about how it underpins the next wave of IT revolution.

Among all the IoT related topics, one things still confused many people, or at least me, is that how to monetize this opp. since the IoT ecosystem is much more diversified and complicated than any of the other industries such as mobile internet . There are lots of IoT/M2M related books out there, but large portion of them focus on either the device layer or single vertical market applications, and hence lack of a comprehensive understanding on how to work stakeholders in the ecosystem to build and deploy a device to cloud solution.

In contrast, this book offers a comprehensive overview of each component of the Internet of Things ecosystem, which I believe is important for people to understand the real concept of IoT. Much of the text consists of describing how to catalogue the IoT applications (M2M, RFID, WSN, and Industry automation)and how to build a horizontal platform to support these vertical markets. And finally, lots of valuable examples and vertical applications are provided in this book.

Basically, this book is an impressive piece of work, and the first section alone is worth the price in time saved sifting through standards documents and market research reports. This is probably the only book that can give a complete and concrete picture of what the real Internet of Things will be. There are very few people I know, quite possibly none, that can discuss this topic from the device to cloud layer with corresponding examples so I know that anyone interested in what the Internet of Things actually is will learn something from this book. I certainly did. But most important, it will allow anyone that mentions the term Internet of Things to actually know what they're talking about.

About the Author

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born a slave. He graduated from what is today Hampton University in 1875, and subsequently taught there. In 1881 he founded the forerunner of Tuskegee University. He made himself and his school two of the most well-known institutions in twentieth-century black America. He earned world-renowned recognition as an educator, social theorist, and spokesperson for African Americans.

Still Good for Today

This is a collection of BTW's Sunday sermons to his Tuskegee students. Originally published in 1902, the lessons on thrift, clean living, sharing what you learn with others, the need to read, and the value of education of the heart as well as the head are still valuable a century later. Does not date too badly and with so many young people growing up today without this kind of advice in the home, it's needed just as much today.
Many uninformed people dismiss BTW as an "Uncle Tom," but the publication of more of his writings like this will show that in spite of any faults, he was a very useful person in the upliftment of people. Read it and see.

Character Building

Character Building (An African American Heritage Book) This book has so many wonderful life lessons which are just as powerful and thought-provoking today as they were when Booker T. Washington wrote them at the turn of the 20th century. I try to read an essay to my students on a regular basis because the essays really hit home with some of the issues my students have. The essays are well-written and easy to read and understand.
