I need more!

This is not a Richelle Mead "young adult" title. Ifyou're looking for another Vampire Academy, this isn't it.

This one's finally for the adults out there.

No teen overdramatic relationships, . Though there is one teenager as part of the cast, this isn't a repeat of Mead's popular but less mature vampire world.

But it's not wonderfully raunchy pornographic adult fiction like Mead's Succubus series either.

The Age of X series is like a bit the Harry Dresden supernatural mysteries, toss in some Honor Harrington military adventure, and a dash of Percy Jackson's world (a young adult book, but the only comparison I could find) for flavor - and you have Age of X.

The characters are well drawn, sometimes not very likeable, but very real and gritty. These are real people, not shining heroes, so if you're looking for role models, you won't find them here. These are broken people who step up to the plate when the world needs them. Involvement with drugs, alcohol, casual sex and sometimes really stupid personal life decision-making is part of these characters, but so is selflessness, love of family and friends, and courage.

The world-building is amazing. This is a future that isn't quite "post-apocalyptic," but it is very different from the one we know. It is a world where disease has ravaged the gene pool, leaving healthy mixed-bloods and genetically damaged pure bloods, but the world soldiered on. There was no war, but political divisions have remade the borders, blending some countries, splitting others, based on their cultural response to the disease.

Mead explores the concepts of religious rule versus enforced secularism, in nearly pure forms, and the cultural responses and effects on individuals, while playing into a supernatural world that neither side is ready for.

Left Hanging in the Balance

This series had me on the edge of my seat and that is the only reason I gave 4 stars. It would have gotten 5 stars had the series not ended there. But there apparently are no more books in the series and the ending just left everyone hanging, probably dying to know what the actual ending to the story was. While the books were filled with lots of action and drama, it was disappointing in the end. What happened to Mae? What happened to Justin? Did Mae find out who her attacker was? Did the God's go to war? If so which God dominated? What happened to Tessa? What happened to Ava? So many questions left unanswered.

Walk like an Egyptian

I have just completed the second book. I have really enjoyed the interplay of the characters who are well developed but I feel the world building is a bit obvious - there is little subtlety as you are hit over the head with the beliefs of each "county" but the world building does contain depth even though it lacks complexity. Mead has moved away form the comfort of YA books (yuck) but still needs to make bolder strides toward adult oriented concepts and interests. Last note - the Tessa character is interesting in book one but turns into a lot of "skimming filler" in book 2

The Alchemyst (2007), the first book in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series,  introduced a wide-ranging group of historical figures who have achieved immortality and are engaged in a present-day struggle for the fate of the world. This second entry picks up exactly where the first left off. Allied with the legendary Nicholas Flamel  on the “good” side are teenage twins Sophie and Josh, who are supremely gifted but with powers that are untrained. Countering them is a new archvillain, Niccolò Machiavelli, who, along with other figures from history and legend (Joan of Arc, a trio of Valkyries), swells the already impressive cast. Plundering every imaginable culture of their heroes and heroines is a clever feat, sure to draw all manner of historically and mythologically minded readers. One weakness starts to show through, however. In a six-book series such as this, each installment begins to feel like a lengthy, glorified chapter rather than its own book complete with a satisfying story arc and resolution. That said, this keeps the pace as an exciting and impeccably thought-out fantasy, well suited for those left in the lurch by Harry Potter’s recent exeunt. Grades 7-10. --Ian Chipman

The real heir to the Harry Potter books

I happened upon this and the first book in the series (The Alchemyst) just before July 4th and have quickly polished them off. For me the use of real historical characters alongside well-researched mythology is nigh irresistible.

The books move along smartly with plenty of action and a narrative that is propulsive and unrelenting. In many ways these feel more like Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books than Harry Potter.

Note that these books are clearly written to be "safe" for a younger audience. No sex, and fairly restrained violence. These are exciting and tense books, but still PG (or maybe barely PG-13).

I am intrigued by the ambiguity around several of the main characters including Machiavelli and Flamel and am eager to see where these books go. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Dave Van Ess is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and an electrical engineer with more than thirty-five years of experience in hardware, software, and analog design.

Throughout his career in several different industries, he has built test and measurement equipment and control systems for high-energy physics research, as well as acoustical equipment to be used underwater in the open sea and arctic ice fields.

A self-described engineer by training, poet by temperament, and a pain in the side of management, he has a wife of forty years, two children, and a new granddaughter with whom he looks forward to building things with Legos.

Less than expected

I didn't think much of this book because I expected to learn much more about the Cypress Semiconductor PSoC chips and the PSoC Creator software. The book provides digital-design exercises, but they're quite basic. Great if you're new to digital electronics, but not too helpful is you want to learn about the PSoC analog-to-digital converters, pulse-width modulators, or serial ports. The PSoC-4 chip/board used throughout the book includes an ARM Cortex-M0 processor "core" that gives users the capability to write C-language code that connects many of the PSoC functions and external devices. Perhaps Van Ess will cover how to use the Cortex-M0 in another book, but I thought this one would at least introduce readers to the M0 core and how to use it.

If you already know about digital electronics and want to move beyond basic experiments, I recommend the many videos and application notes available on the Cypress Semiconductor Web site. I also recommend the PSoC chips and the PSoC Creator tools highly. They're easy to use and provide a way to concentrate on a design, not on the implementation details. Each component within the tools directly links to a data sheet and an example project, both of which kickstart projects.

Excellent book for learning digital design. If you want to do the labs, I highly recommend to get the very economical Boolean and PSoC Pioneer Boards.

While obviously expensive (as text books always are), I'm not a huge fan of loose leaf books. I do like that this has basically the books for 2 semesters of courses in one (at my school-Accounting 101 and 102) so that helps ease the expense a bit.

misteriosamente cautivadora

Que puedo decir de tan maravillosa historia? Creo que después de leerla, me faltaran las palabras Idóneas, que alcancen el nivel de critica a su autor.
Juan nos vuelve a sorprender con su maravillosa pluma de horror, misterio y algo de ciencia ficción. Me encanta su narrativa fluida, y realista. Los personajes tan nítidamente descritos al igual que las escenas. Cada capítulo es una aventura que te envuelve y sumerge dentro de esta historia, donde varios de los habitantes de Harmony Ville son sorprendidos por la codicia de un millonario sin escrúpulos.... Que se refleja claramente en la pregunta que abre camino a esta intrigante historia, "es la ingenuidad humana el factor que los hombres poderosos necesitan....?" si la respuesta es si....

En este libro Juan nos muestra hasta donde es capaz de llegar la gente por poder y lo poco que les importa las perdidas "minimas" por el bien "mayor" .

Una historia que te matendra con los nervios de punta,queriendo saber el final.

Cada escena está tan bien detallada que no es dificil imaginarsela y sumegirse en la historia, sentir la felicidad de las personas al principio cuando creen que han encontrado una nueva oportunidad en sus vidas y luego el miedo, la deseperacion, la frustracion, la ira al verse engañados y utilizados.

Me ha encantado este libro, me ha mantenido en un suspenso, que creia que me daria un ataque jajajajajja, pero sin duda es un libro fantastico y que no debe dejar de leerse.
